[12] Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
How does this commandment apply to a mature/adult Christian?
If a Christian is honoring their earthly CHRISTIAN parents, you’re also honoring God and obeying his commandment. However, if your earthly parents are not Christians, a Christian should not honor them by following their sinful ways. A Christian should separate themselves from those parents and no longer consider them as parents. Although you’re separated from your earthly parents, this doesn’t mean that you should not help them if they’re in need.
God is your father. Honor God with your faith by removing sin from your life. The Bible teaches that family for Christians are others who obey the word of God.
Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world and God the father resurrected him from the dead. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is the head of the body of Christ. Christians are led by the spirit of Christ and are Sons of God, Christians we are one in the body of Christ. A Christians should not allow anything or anyone to cause them to be sinful. It is said in the Bible in many ways that Christian should not keep close relationships with the sinful, e.g. the Bible teaches that you should cut your right hand off if it causes them to sin.
The gift of salvation has been given to the world. If a person has rejected the gift of salvation, then they should bear the consequences. Don’t accept or support sin.
As a child, God’s commandment to honor thy father and thy mother includes obeying and respecting your earthly parents. As an adult/matured Christian, honor thy father and thy mother means obeying God’s commandment and having faith in God through Jesus Christ. As part of the body of Christ, we are children of God, and we should not compromise our faith in God to please man. A Christian should not honor any sinful worldly traditions, they should rebuke it. Cut of pathways to living sinfully.

Matthew 10:34-39 KJV[34] Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
Matthew 18:1-6 KJV
[1] At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? [2] And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, [3] and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. [4] Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. [5] And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. [6] But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
